in ár gcroíthe go deo’ In Our Hearts Forever These are the words, in the Irish language that the family of the late Margaret Keane wished to have inscribed on her gravestone in Coventry. The Church of England’s Ecclesiastical Court refused to allow this. Wales PEN Cymru joins PEN na hÉireann, Irish PEN, in supporting the Family’s Appeal to change this decision. The Irish language was very close to Margaret Keane’s heart and an important part of her identity. Linguistic Rights are at the core of all PEN campaigns worldwide. The Girona Manifesto, adopted by PEN International exactly ten years ago, states that ‘respect for all languages and cultures is fundamental to the process of constructing and maintaining dialogue and peace in the world.’ We ask the Church of England’s Ecclesiastical Court to reconsider the decision and to allow the words, in Irish, without insisting on a translation, ‘in ár gcroíthe go deo’, in our hearts forever, on the gravestone. |
